Makes me wonder where you were and in what branch. I have been in the Navy for 20 years, on 5 ships (from frigates to big decks) in 4 squadrons and travelled from the Caribbean to the Baltic to the Adriatic to the Med, and I have yet to see any significant homosexual activity, with the exception of the day Clinton announced 'Dont Ask Dont Tell'. The day during which the 3 homosexual rapes that occured onboard the USS Kennedy berthed as NAS Mayport were 'violently' and rapidly covered up, lest Clinton get egg on his face. Of the few other instances, each case involved commisioned officers and underage civilians and were dealt with under civil law primarily.

Higher standard? <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Band_of_Thebes" target="_blank">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_Band_of_Thebe...</a>

Or is fighting to the death while everyone else flees not a high enough standard simply because they are homosexuals?

Thanks, OldmanRick, and thank you for your service.

And history does show that homosexuals have been in society since societies began. All that shows is that man's engaged in deviant behavior since time began. Presence and ability don't, in my opinion, correlate to "ought to be there."

It's about the military adhering to a higher standard than is acceptable in the civilian world. This higher standard is, again in my opinion, essential to maintaining the most effective fighting force. Immoral behavior such as adultery has no place in the military, either, so the standard doesn't apply to homosexual behavior alone.

Excellent point about fraternization laws. When I was young buck stationed in Gulfport MS., I remember going to the bars and mingling with what I thought were locals girls. As the Battalions would rotate in/out a new group of ladies would be out on the prowl. Since I was young it took me a while to realize that these were all the wives of the guys out on rotation.

p.s. Swingers should be able to serve openly! [sarc]

Were I gay and currently in the military, I would more than likely not broadcast the fact. But that's my opinion.

Ideas are powerful. And they have consequences. Common sense is great, but unless you've got the ideas which back your common sense, it won't hold up before a determined and coherent ideology... whether that opponent ideology is true or not.

Thing is? If they choose to do so, they already ARE serving honorably. There are many Gays in the military who serve with distinction, but they keep their sexuality OUT of the Military.

Key question is whether they can be openly gay or not...

You mean the way women are already irritated by unwanted advances in the military?
Should we just expel all women from the military?
